Nurture a Money Tree

A legend has it that a poor Taiwanese farmer discovered mysterious plants with five leaves in his field. The farmer was mesmerized by their beauty and strength and decided to tend to the plants for market. The ‘money tree’ became so popular that the farmer soon became quite wealthy.

While this folklore offers the potential of “good fortune,” the origin of the potted Pachira Aquatica plant is only about 40 years old. A man named Liu Hai found that if he braided the stalk stems in early growth, the plant would maintain the braid into maturity.

The Pachira plant, or ‘money tree',’ has remained a symbol of good luck and fortune. Some Feng Shui enthusiasts claim that this plant fills any missing element in a room as the five leaves symbolize the five Chinese elements - water, earth, fire, wood, and metal. When your money tree has six or seven leaves it is considered a sign of extra good fortune. Money trees also make great gifts! In Asia, they are often decorated with ribbon and/or ornaments.
