Clean Up Clutter

Whether you are a once a year spring cleaner or a year-round clean freak, taking time to declutter your spaces can positively impact your financial life too!

Clutter can feel unkempt, stagnant and burdensome. We often dismiss the piles with a “someday” attitude, not realizing how clutter can deplete us energetically. Both Feng Shui experts and Neuroscientists agree that too much “visual stimuli” competes for our attention and can cause stress and depression. Clutter can also cause us to waste considerable time and money.

Clutter literally “blocks” or “weighs down” physical spaces. Cleaning up these spaces vastly improves the flow of Qi. The same “flow” we want when it comes to our money. Decluttering offers us a simple, yet powerful, practice to change the energy and create flow. And it informs the universe you are making space for new opportunities and experiences to come in!

Practice: Spring Fling

Pick a number between 20 and 40. This is your “Fling” number. Now grab a bag (or box) and move through your home “flinging” unwanted items into the bag until you reach your number! Then take the bag straight to the trash or goodwill. While you are walking around, take note of what spaces are calling you to “clean up clutter” and commit to tackle them.

Next take this same practice principle directly to your finances:

  • Pick a percentage (from 10-30%). Now review your discretionary monthly expenses, especially subscriptions! Cut or unsubscribe those that feel unwanted in terms of use and necessity, undue “to do” pressure, or too time-consuming.

  • While you are reviewing monthly expenses, take note of the auto-payment dates and request changes in due dates to help smooth the outflow, as needed.

  • Reduce your paperwork by selecting “paperless” for all bills and statements.

  • Close unused accounts.

  • Bonus: Establish savings “flow” by setting up an automatic transfer to your savings every month.
